At Rosie’s Roadshow, we recognize that every community in Southern Ontario has unique needs and challenges. Our mission is to develop programs that meet these local needs, from rural towns to bustling cities, ensuring that our support reflects the distinct characteristics of each community.
Addressing Aging Needs Across Urban and Rural Areas
One of the key areas we focus on is fostering age-inclusive spaces across both urban and rural parts of Southern Ontario. By 2030, almost a quarter of Ontarians will be over the age of 65, but access to resources varies significantly by location. Rural seniors, for instance, often face barriers to healthcare, social services, and accessible transportation. A study from the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) found that older adults in rural Ontario are twice as likely to experience isolation as those in urban areas. In response, Rosie’s Roadshow has developed programs that partner with local organizations to increase social connection in these communities. For example, we bring digital literacy workshops to rural areas, helping seniors stay connected and maintain their independence.
In urban settings, challenges like the high cost of housing and limited accessible options are common. According to the Canadian Urban Institute, nearly 85% of seniors in Ontario want to age in place, yet affordable, age-friendly housing remains scarce. Rosie’s Roadshow partners with housing advocates and community groups to raise awareness of available services, educate on accessibility rights, and create networks that empower older adults to stay in their communities with the care they need.
Supporting Family Caregivers with Tools and Resources
As Southern Ontario’s population ages, the demand for caregiving support grows. Family caregivers provide most of the long-term care in Ontario, often without sufficient training or resources. The Ontario Caregiver Organization reports that nearly 30% of family caregivers feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities, especially those in smaller towns with fewer resources.
To help address these issues, Rosie’s Roadshow hosts workshops specifically for caregivers, covering essential topics like stress management, legal rights, and financial planning. Recently, we launched a pilot program with caregiver support organizations in Southern Ontario, providing hands-on training and connecting caregivers to local resources and support networks.
What’s Next for Rosie’s Roadshow?
As we continue to grow, we’re excited to expand our series of events across Southern Ontario. These sessions will provide practical guidance and connect people with local resources, whether they’re older adults, family caregivers, or advocates for age inclusivity. Each program is designed to offer actionable insights that attendees can bring back to their communities to make a positive impact.
Rosie’s Roadshow is more than a collection of events; it’s a movement dedicated to fostering inclusive, supportive communities in Southern Ontario. Join us as we work to create a better future for aging and caregiving in our region.
